Holiday Freebies

Who doesn't love free stuff? This time of year is prime time for cosmetic companies to throw together a little incentive to purchase an item from them in order to get their free 'swag' bag of goodies. Ok its not technically free-free since you do need to buy something first, but with a small purchase of anywhere between $19.99 - $29.99, you can get a nice little re-useable makeup bag filled with free makeup products (travel size usually, but not always), and who doesn't love that?

I for one am a huge fan of this practice and always direct my purchase to the companies who do offer freebies just so I can get more for my money. The best part is that they aren't giving you discontinued products or un-popular colors, but are actually giving you products that you will want to use because they want you as a customer again and hope you will fall in love with something and return and buy it when you run out. It's worked on me many times, especially with the free perfume samples...I always come back to buy a full size bottle.

Lancome was the first major cosmetic company to offer the free product with purchase, and then all other companies followed suit. In my opinion though, Lancome still reigns supreme with the freebies because they give a lot for such a little purchase AND you get to pick your items too. I bought mascara the other day for $24 and walked away with a full size eye cream, lipstick, blush, 2 eye liner pencils, lip gloss, and an eye shadow duo compact. I was really impressed with the quantity and that I got to choose my own 7 items.

So go check out the freebies being offered right now and get your own goodie bag to play with.

Destination Wedding Makeup

You're engaged! Now the planning begins, and whether you get married locally, back home or abroad for a destination wedding, you need to budget for a makeup artist to make sure your wedding photos look amazing.

Your regular makeup routine won't cut it and only a professional can give you camera-ready makeup. Here is an article I wrote for Destinations Travel Magazine regarding destination wedding makeup, and why you need to hire a professional on such an epic day.

Falls MUST Haves

I am not particularly a fan of fall/winter because I adore heat, sunshine and summer clothes more, but the products we get to use sometimes during the chillier months do have its perks. This fall while your body is all bundled up (and probably your head too), let your gorgeous face peek through, and remind everyone that spring is only 6 months away.

This season you should incorporate coral, pink or berry colored glosses/lipsticks into your look. Pink blush is also flattering on everyone, shimmer or dewy skin (think J-Lo, she rocks it) looks fresh, and really subtle eye makeup. Nothing too busy. Matte anything right now (lipstick, eye shadow, face) can look harsh, so aim for "fresh". Using a tinted moisturizer is great to keep the cold wind and hot heaters from making your skin look dehydrated.

Flipping through fashion magazines is a great way to be inspired not only for fashion, but what's trending now in makeup as well. If you are not a follow-the-masses kind of girl, I still recommend that spring and fall require a makeup change, especially in your skin-care regiment, so you can benefit from the seasons changing and always look your best year round.

Tricky Treat?

Happy Halloween! I love, love, love this time of year and the whole production of deciding on a costume, getting the accessories and putting it all together. Halloween doesn't need to be difficult though and you can pull together a look with makeup alone; just depends on how creative you want to get, but YouTube has awesome pictures and video tutorials to help you on your way.

I personally like to go for the sexy costumes where I still look like me without war paint covering my face, but regardless of what my costume is, I still try to incorporate my makeup with the look. When I was Medusa one year I airbrushed my face gold and attached green and blue jewels around my hairline to mimic abstract snake skin. This year I am going retro and will be a 1960's Playboy bunny and will do period hair and makeup to tie it all together. The fun of Halloween for me is getting dressed up and seeing how creative people get with their details.

Me as Wonder Woman & Medusa

When deciding on a costume, go all out on the makeup and hair because if you are going to do it, do it all the way. Still stumped on what to wear? Why not create your own costume with a painted face by Googling 'halloween makeup idea' images where you will get some amazing examples of costumes you can create around your makeup. Whatever you decide, have a safe and festive Halloween and hope you get the option to either trick or treat ;) .

Winter Brides Get Glowing

Not every woman getting married wants to be a summer bride, so winter brides don't need to sacrifice that bridal 'glow' just because it's not 82* outside. The winter months don't pose any obstacles to looking phenomenal on your wedding day, but getting your skin ready and your makeup just right is the key.

Taking care of your skin is always important, but the months leading up to your wedding date is most essential, no matter what time of year you are getting married. You need to remember if you baked your skin all summer, you will have to deal with (possible) sun spots, faded tans, dry skin (on top of already winter dry skin), and a overall un-even skin tone to cover, so if the damage has already been done, don't fret, there's an app for that.

Spray tanning is a great way to even you out, but it needs to be a fairly light 'natural' color so you don't look fake and sprayed. Orange is not a good color on anyone, even an Oompa Loompa. Airbrush makeup is another great way to get even looking skin that is custom blended to match your skin tone (not paint it a different color), and regular foundations work well on the face but can't be used on the body (shoulders, arms, back). So depending on what you are dealing with will determine which option is best for you. Whatever you decide, you definitely need a trial-run to test it out first before the wedding.

If your skin is fair, you still need a little color on your face with a shimmery blush in a color that is 1-2 shades darker than your natural blushed state. A light bronzer is another perfect alternative to getting that 'glow' when applied sparingly. Despite the richer fall/winter colors you may be having at your wedding, you don't need to go dark on the makeup or lips if that's not your style. Finding makeup looks in bridal magazines is always a great tool to envision the look you want and help your makeup artist create.

A lot of my brides (year round) will spray tan their bodies but airbrush their face to blend it all together. If you have severe dry skin, spray tanning is not the route to go because showering will exfoliate the color and leave your skin looking dirty, and more difficult to even out. So scrub, scrub, scrub that skin (gently) to remove all dryness and then moisturize, moisturize, moisturize to keep it supple before you determine which route you are going to go. Any canvas can be painted into a work of art, and your bridal day look is no exception.

OMG Lashes

I try to mix up my posts but admit I fall back on lips and lashes a lot because, 1) there is always new products/colors coming out to try, and 2) it's the finishing touch to any look. I am always buying makeup for my kit (and myself) and this weekend I purchased Hypnose Doll Lashes from Lancome, and have to say it's pretty damn cool.

Granted I am a huge fan of Maybelline mascara for all the right reasons (cost, effect, availability, end results) but sometimes I like to splurge on the pricey mascaras too just to see (prove myself wrong?) that pricey doesn't always mean better. In this case however, Hypnose is well worth the price and did give amazing results. The wand is cone shaped and no matter how many coats (wet or dry) I reapplied to my lashes, I didn't have lumps. None. Zero. Zilch.

I don't appreciate the fake ads of any cosmetic company showing sky-high lashes if you use their product (with the tiny disclaimer that the photos are 'enhanced') but Hypnose did deliver on 'doll lashes' as claimed in the name and I definitely will be including this in my routine, along with my other Lancome splurge of Definicils mascara. That stuff just lenghtens your lashes like crazy! Doesn't give you fullness like Hypnose does, but pick your battles, right?

The Face of Fall

We all know that trends repeat themselves, so this isn't actually an alert of an amazing new color concept in makeup, but more of a what-you-should-know for the latest looks that hit the runways in New Yorks famous Fashion Week that was held in New York City last week. Fashion forward styles include makeup and hair trends as well, so typically what is seen on the runways is what you'll soon find on the streets, so here's your guide to stay with (ahead?) of the pack.
Dramatic metallic smokey eyes with berry lips.

Metallic lids, bold berry rich lips and flawless skin were rampant in the fashion world. In my opinion, this look never gets old. There were a lot of bold eyebrows and smokey eyes as well, so you have a few choices to run with to complete your look this fall if you follow trends. Fashion aside, makeup completes your look, regardless of what you are wearing, and it can either dress you up or dress you down,so keep that in mind when attempting one (two or three) of the looks for fall.

The best way to get on board with the latest and greatest looks is to buy compact makeup shades that are sold together so you can get the colors that go together and compliment each other. Eyeshadows are a great place to start. Sometimes lipstick/glosses are also sold this way too. A berry pout in the same color family (cool or warm) that is best for your skin tone can never go wrong.

If you haven't noticed already, I am sure you will start to see now in magazine and t.v. commercials the ads selling these looks since what ever is seen on Fashion Week is what sets the trends for all cosmetic companies to follow. You don't have to use their interpretation as the gospel last word in makeup or fashion, because it really does boil down to making the look work for you, especially in the best shades that are most complimenting for you. Metallics and berries look great on everyone though, so you can't go wrong.

Hidden Talent at the Mall Makeup Counter

Yesterday I went shopping at Macy's and was stopped 4 times as I walked through the beauty counters from sales girls trying to get me to sit down and get my makeup done. Initially I think, why would I want a make-over when I am clearly made-up, but understand they are just trying to make a sale. I stop to chat with the last girl to see what magic product she was promoting and noticed something that most makeup counter girls had in common: they were attractive, had nice skin and their makeup was tastefully done. To me, that's important. Just like I wouldn't get my hair done by someone who had fried dried out hair with horrible color. Depending on the cosmetic brand depended on the look each girl wore too, because I noticed Chanel, Shiseido and Dior girls wore more makeup, while Clinque and Lancome were done up lighter...just an observation.

Upon further discussion with the sales girl, I could see her makeup was artfully done and knew right away she knew what she was doing. I rarely ever let someone else do my makeup but sometimes it's fun to see what they would do different, so I sat down and let her do up my eyes in a 'night' look. She first asked me what the event was and what I would be wearing. Loved that. She wanted to create a look that was going to be right for me and the event and that is definitely important.

She then asked about any allergies I had or sensitivity to products I'd experienced and then proceeded to do my makeup once she had the go-ahead. She was professional, friendly and although I knew the ultimate goal was to sell me the products she used, she was still having fun doing my makeup and it was obvious she enjoyed doing it. She was done in 15 min and I was impressed with the new eye look she gave me that I asked for her card because there are times when I hire assistants to help me tackle large bookings, and she was clearly talented.

Granted not all sales girls in the makeup department are makeup artists, and I have seen (and heard) horror stories of such encounters, but there are some good ones out there if you pay attention. So next time you walk through the mall and browse the latest products, don't turn down an opportunity to get your makeup done because you just might walk away with a new look you'll love, and the products to re-create it, from someone genuinely talented.

Why Airbrush Makeup Can Kick Your Makeups Butt Any Day

Yahoo! SHINE asked me to write an article on my expertise, airbrush makeup, and it was published. So if you were ever curious about what makes airbrush makeup so great and the benefits of using it versus traditional cosmetics, here's your chance to learn more.

Lip-a-licious

I've always felt that if you only had time to do one thing (makeup-wise), your lips had to be done. I feel naked without it and believe it just makes you look 'polished' even if no other makeup is worn. NARS Larger Than Life Lip Gloss has just come out (this month) and their new, innovative gloss is specially formulated to nourish and enhance lips. The cool part about their new lip gloss it's new bristle brush, which provides a perfect application to help define and shape lips because of its extra small size.

It's available in 9 gorgeous shades and stays in place all day because it's also a long-wear gloss. No goop or glop, it's shiny with vibrant colors that keep your lips smooth. That's extra incentive to use it in my book. You can get it at Sephora.

If that wasn't enough, designer Kate Spade has teamed up with the brand Lipstick Queen, to create a new line of lipsticks called Supercalifragilipstick. Seriously. It's set to launch in September, and currently has 4 shades in its line. The ingredients include silk powders, shea butter and antioxidants to make lips soft and supple. The lipsticks will be sold at Kate Spade stores and at KateSpade.com.
So ladies, treat yourself to one of these little products that's sure to pack a lot of punch and garner some attention.

Are You a Clutter Queen?

When is the last time you cleaned out your makeup bag? Yeah, that's what I thought. Women tend to accumulate lots of makeup items, some we rarely use, but stash in our makeup bag anyway. What most women end up carrying is a ton of products in a messy bag.  An organized makeup bag really can make doing your makeup that much more efficient. So take 15-minutes to empty out the contents of your bag and separate it into 2 piles. One pile for your everyday makeup, and one pile for your rarely worn, or special event makeup.

My organized 4-tiered on wheels makeup case.

From these two piles, remove anything that is old, broken, leaking, empty (or almost) or that has chemically separated (or smells weird). Mascara has a shelf life of 3 months once it's opened, then it becomes dried out with all that in-and-out wand pumping, and is usually the reason why your mascara flakes. Foundation can last 2 years if not subjected to extreme heat conditions. cream or powder blush and eye shadows can last years, same with lip and eye pencils, lipsticks, compact powders and glosses. As long as your makeup has never melted and re-hardened, it should be good. Clean off any residue, gunk or grime with a wet paper towel from the makeup containers and the interior of your makeup bag. If it's beyond cleaning, treat yourself to a new one.

Makeup brushes that you carry in your bag should be cleaned at least once a month and never left loose in your bag. Keep them in a brush tube (Sephora has them) so the bristles stay clean and don't lose their shape. Also less chance of bacteria growth opportunities this way. Makeup sponges/wedges can be tossed once completely soiled so that you get the best application with your foundation. If your sponge looks funky, it probably is.

I would recommend to only carry with you the daily touch up essentials. Leave the rest at home in a drawer, makeup case or separate makeup bag (especially the special occasion makeup). There is no need to carry around every item you own, and it's a nice way to keep your makeup bag clean and clutter free. Since I wear airbrush I don't carry around much to touch-up, but my makeup case for work is always kept cleaned and organized. I'm a huge fan of Sephora for the beauty tools needed at affordable prices to organize your makeup.

My daily essentials - floss, gloss, eye & lip liner

When you do your makeup in the morning, toss those touch-up items you may need in your daily makeup bag, along with a few 'evening' makeup essentials you may need (like shadow, darker eye liner or lipstick) so you can easily transition from work to play if needed. Don't forget to keep a pair of tweezers (tip protected so they stay aligned), a sharpener (that catches/stores the shavings), travel pack of Q-tips, blotting sheets and a mirror in your case as well.

I once heard that people who kept a cluttered/messy car meant they had a messy life. A messy desk meant messy finances and a messy bedroom meant a messy love life. I can see the connection. Call it feng-shui or just a coincidence, but things tend to be less hectic when you're organized. Now maybe a messy makeup bag isn't so dramatic, but in my opinion, it could mean less finesse in how you look because you simply can't be bothered.

Avoid a Makeup Meltdown

I love summer, but maintaining your face under the hot summer sun can be tedious, especially if you live in humid conditions (like I do in Atlanta). So how can you keep your makeup on your face and not running down your neck looking like a hot mess? The answer is to prep your skin before doing your makeup, which will give you lasting results.

For starters, a freshly washed face works better than hours old because your natural oils would have resurfaced by then. So wash with a gentle cleanser, pat dry and apply your moisturizer and/or sunscreen, allowing it to penetrate and dry before applying your makeup. Nothing will stick with a slick barrier between your skin and the makeup so prepping your skin is the only way to achieve great results and letting the products absorb.

Also, when looking for a moisturizer or sunscreen, you obviously want one that is, a) meant for your face (not body), and b) right for your skin type. Formulas are concocted to work with specific people in mind, so look for one that's right for your needs. Using a primer on your face is another great way to enhance your makeups ability to last. Primers hold on to the makeup and keep it in place.

M.A.C. makes a great one I love, Prep + Prime. It's a light, oil-free emulsion that helps cloak visible pores while controlling oil and shine. Applies "wet" and dries instantly to create an invisible, long-lasting natural matte finish. Ideal for the T-zone.

Whether you wear foundation, tinted moisturizer, or just concealer to cover a few spots, the overall effect needs to be blended, even and color matched for a natural look. Once your makeup is done, some may use a powder to set it, which isn't necessary, but a translucent "finishing" powder applied with a brush is ok (especially focusing on the forehead, nose and chin areas). This type of powder will help absorb oil to eliminate a shiny face as the day goes on. A little goes a long way.

What you do from the moment you step outside and battle the heat will determine how well your makeup lasts. So remember to keep your hands off, blot (not wipe) any moisture or shine, and avoid using a compact powder on your face (that you apply with a puff/pad rubbing it on your face). Blotting really will eliminate shine throughout the day so I'd skip the powder if at all possible. Applying powder just packs on product and looks bad after a few hours.

So no matter how hot it gets outside, your face can remain flawless if you prep it right and maintain it properly. You can keep your cool in the sunshine and your beautiful makeup too.

Bridal Beauty on a Budget

I've said it before, and I will say it again - one thing a bride should never skimp on is her wedding day beauty. Ever. You've found THE perfect dress to go with THE perfect guy, so why would you ever contemplate looking anything less than gorgeous on your wedding day? But what's a bride on a budget to do? Her homework.

Finding the right wedding makeup artist should never be based on price alone, but rather start your research on what you are willing or not willing to go without. For example: do you want traditional or airbrush makeup? Just bridal makeup or bridal party too? A consultation trial prior or just wedding day only? Professional makeup artists are in the business to make you look sensational.

A makeup artist who specializes in weddings especially understands that you also need to look fabulous on film and unforgettable in photos too. There are products, colors and techniques used to ensure you get the best look. Finding an artist who has quality and quantity of photos for you to see their work is important to help you decide, because obviously if you like what you see, you can ask yourself if their style is what you are looking for (just like you'd pick a photographer).

Typically if you love what you see in pictures you will love how it looks in person too. The only time this is not true would be a high-fashion photo shoot where sometimes the makeup applied to models is strictly for photos and not ideal for everyday wear (or weddings), so look at bridal photo samples of real brides to make your decision. You need to relate to the picture and envision yourself as the bride. I'm a huge fan of before & after photos (my website has lots) because I like for potential clients to see what I am capable of, and the transformation that occured. Seeing a bunch of pretty "after" photos of models is hard to relate to in my opinion.

Lastly, when communicating with your potential makeup artist, do not hesitate to ask questions about products, experience with weddings, references of past clients or even a discount (especially if you are getting married on a Friday or Sunday) or paying for your bridal party as well and just need to cut costs, but don't want to cut out makeup. Most makeup artists will try to work with your budget, so have fair expectations, because we do want your business and your referrals.

Whether you hire a makeup artist from a cosmetics counter (whose makeup you like) or one whose business caters to brides (like me), rest assured if you do your research you will find one whose work you will love within the price you can afford. It's tough to have champagne taste on a beer budget, I know, so if you need to cut out the baby's breath from your center pieces to afford a professional makeup artist, do it! No one remembers what the center pieces  looked like anyway..it's how the bride looked that they will notice and remember. How you look is the most important detail of that day so find a way to include it in your budget.

Alcohol & Your Beauty

Picture this - you are getting ready for a night out and make efforts to doll yourself up and look hot. What you look like the next morning after a night of drinking however isn't so pretty. What happens once alcohol is involved will eventually catch up with you over night, and over time, so is it worth it? Does alcohol really (eventually) steal your beauty? Yes.

This article is not about the obvious risks alcohol has on your health, this is about alcohol and your beauty (a pure vanity piece). While drinking in moderation once in awhile is not a bad thing, the effects are still lingering. Alcohol will dehydrate your skin, cause weight gain, result in broken veins under the skins surface, bloodshot and puffy eyes, enlarged pores, blotchy red complexion, loss of contours in your face, lack of resilience and even make you stink. Nothing is pretty about any of that and who wants to look like a hot mess (like Tara Reid or Lindsay Lohan)?

For those of you who invest as much in to their lotions, potions and beauty products as they do on weekend drinking, your efforts are fruitless and a waste of money. If you are going to drink, drink a glass of water inbetween alcoholic drinks; not only to dilute the alcohol, but also hydrate your body as well (and combat a hang over if possible). Notably as we get older the side effects of alcohol age us more harshly. Wouldn't you agree?

My reality check? Years ago I could drink without anything more than a hangover headache the next day and still manage to look good, but now that's not the case. Not because I am older, but because the effect alcohol has on me now when I wake up the next morning just makes me look like I had a 'rough night'  with puffy eyes and blotchy skin that I have to deal with this ugly side effect for days. Nothing I can use or do makes me look better and so it's totally not worth it to me anymore.

Public Service Announcement in the U.K.

So next time you order a round (or 2, 3, 4...) of drinks, think about what it's ultimately doing to your looks. Moderation is key and it affects us differently, but once you start noticing how bad you look, it's time to reconsider if it's worth it at all. Cheers.

The Ugly Truth About Stress

Unless we live in an animated Disney cartoon, we all have some form of stress in our lives. Some people manage stress better than others, and although stress is linked to several health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, ulcers, cancer, diabetes and body aches - to name a few, it is also linked to how we look as well. With stress you can experience hair loss, acne, tooth and gum disease, obesity, extreme weight-loss, cold sores and pre-mature aging (wrinkles and gray hair).

The term "beauty sleep" isn't a joke. Sleep really does rejuvenate our bodies from the day we had and allow our bodies to recuperate. When we stress we typically lose sleep over what troubles us because your mind won't shut off and you lay awake thinking about everything. Learning to shut down your brain and relax to allow yourself to get rest is essential or you will wake up with puffy under eyes, dark circles and a sallow complexion as a result.

Your skin will also take a toll with occasional flare-ups of rashes, acne, and for those prone to eczema and rosacea; stress is the ultimate trigger. Your hair can whiten/gray and in extreme cases, lead to patches of hair loss, which is all linked to excessive levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) that gets released into the bloodstream during high stress times.

Gaining weight (typically the mid-section) is another side effect of stress, as well as extreme weight-loss for others. Not the ideal diet when you look bad all over. Women in general are a higher risk for stress than men (working mothers specifically, whether married or single) because they bear a greater work load than men or other women. We all have experienced financial, career or relationship woes that stress us, but learning to control and maintain your stress is the key.

Some people have personality traits that cause them to over-respond to stressful events or are even biologically prone to stress (lacking levels of seratonin which is the brain chemical involved with feelings of well-being). Certain diseases associated with immune abnormalities (rheumatoid arthritis or eczema) may actually weaken a response to stress. Naturally, the longer the duration of the stress, the more harmful the effects, so finding what yours are is the first step in dealing with it.

Whether you exercise regularly, do yoga, get massages, or engage in another form of physcial activity to release stress, you need to clear your mind and life as much as you can of the issues that ail you. Stress is unavoidable, but managing it is vital; so educate yourself on what your stress triggers are, how to control them and what methods will help you relax to deal with them. Your health (and looks) are at stake, so learning to isolate the issues will lead to a healthier more beautiful life.

Check Yourself (Before You Wreck Yourself)

It happens all the time! You notice that when applying your makeup using the bathroom mirror at home, your makeup looks fine. Then will either look too dark or too light once you get in the car, arrive to work or catch a glimpse in the restaurant mirror at night. The best solution to ensure you get the right face for the right time of day is to invest in a lighted makeup mirror. Really.

We all saw these growing up (mom probably had one) and although it may seem like a novelty, it is a great tool to have. Some still come with adjustable lights for daylight, office or candlelight (evening), and others come with soft bulb wattage that's complimentary for day or night that won't steer you wrong. Harsh fluorescent lighting is not ideal lighting to apply makeup. Natural daylight is, but who really does their makeup facing a window?

Why is it important to apply your makeup under the right lighting conditions? Because how much or little you end up applying can make or break your look. Too much blush? Too light or dark foundation? Not enough concealer to hide dark circles? Overdose on powder? You need the right lighting conditions in order to achieve the perfect face. Trust me on this....vanity lighted mirrors weren't made for nothing!

Celebrities are in the hands of their entourage and makeup artist(s) to ensure they look spectacular every time they step out, but we all have seen mistakes slip by. The ONLY explanation to these mishaps is bad lighting.

Eva, Nicole and Uma are all victims of bad makeup lighting.

You can spend anywhere from $25 - $450 on a lighted makeup vanity mirror and they are available every where (online). Unless you have poor eye sight, I do not suggest getting a magnified lighted mirror because you don't need it.  Lighted mirrors with magnification are perfect for those who can't do their makeup without their glasses, but can't do their eye makeup because they are wearing their glasses, so this gives an advantage.

Ever notice sometimes at the makeup counter the makeup you try on looks better at the store than it does at home? Even the color can look different? It's the lighting! You will be amazed how much better your makeup looks under fabulous conditions, day or night.

10 Wedding Make-up Dont's

Looking back at your wedding photos one day shouldn't make you cringe (fashion choices aside) because trends will change, however, a classic and beautiful bridal look will never go out of style. Here are 10 wedding makeup trends brides should avoid for the one day in her life where her picture will be taken the most.

1. Too much glitter: It can catch the light or camera flash and create 'stars' in photos on your face. Shimmer (keyword) is your better option to not look like a disco-ball.

2. Over-doing a smokey eye: It can make your eyes look small and/or look messy in pictures. You can have that look but the range of how smokey is too smokey should be tried (and tested) to find the perfect look.

3. Matching your eyeshadow or lipstick to your wedding colors: Very 80's and not necessary.

4. Not wearing a lipstain when wearing red lipstick: It's a beautiful color choice that is not maintenance free unless you wear a long-wear lipstick that stains your lips. This will allow you to kiss, eat and drink without smearing or needing a touch up.

5. Not wearing foundation: Whether (you think) you need it or not, use it, because it creates an even skin tone.

6. Wearing unmatched foundation: The makeup on your face and neck should blend, so use a foundation that is your exact skin tone to eliminate the obvious look of foundation.

7. Wearing a bronzer like foundation: See #6. Bronzer is not meant to color your face to look tan, its meant to add warmth.

8. Letting your au-natural bridesmaid(s) go without makeup: Every woman whose picture will be taken that day needs to have makeup on. Period. It brings color to your face, covers imperfections and makes everyone look better in pictures. Pictures you will have forever to look back on.

9. Not feeling comfortable in your wedding makeup: In order to look beautiful, you need to feel beautiful, which is why doing a trial run of your wedding day look prior to the big day is important. This gives you the opportunity to see how you will look and be confident and happy with the end result.

10. Disco eyes: Eye makeup that resembles bright colors of the rainbow. Its not only distracting but unattractive in photos.

Faking It with False Lashes

Ever see a celebrity whose eyes (lashes) weren't envy worthy? In case you thought all models and movie stars were blessed with freakishly long lashes, you'll be happy to know you can get the same look with false lashes.

Since eyes are the most expressive part of the face, all women should consider this one accessory needed in order to really make their eyes stand out. Whether you do it for an event, a night out, or daily; once you try wearing false lashes you won’t want to go back.

Here is an example one one brand to show you between strip and individual false lashes:

I rarely ever use the strip lashes on clients because I feel I get a more natural looking effect with individual lashes. All false lashes come in a variety of lengths, fullness and designs (yes, designs) and you can find all types at your local drug or beauty supply store. Luckily they are affordable enough ($4-$6) try a few different styles and find the perfect one for you. M.A.C. and various other companies make false lashes in an array of designs, but cost a little more ($12-$30) so once you've mastered the application, you can play with the more expensive ones without wasting your money.
Sample of some lash styles available

When applying the lashes you need to remember to take your time and use DUO brand adhesive (for lashes) for best results.

STEPS:
1. Use an eyelash curler on your natural lashes and apply a light coat of mascara.

2. Use tweezers to handle and apply lashes. Dip the lash base lightly into the adhesive then apply it to your eyelashes, starting with the outside edge and moving your way in.

3. Position the false lashes at the root of your natural lashes, not in a row above your lashes, to achieve a natural look.

4. If necessary, use a dark liquid liner to conceal the glue base (if noticeable) where you applied them in order to blend the lashes in better. Even gently doing a smudge smokey eye is good if you are not comfortable using liquid liner. Once you are done, you won't need more mascara (which could pull out false lashes when brushing wand through). So if you do want more mascara, just be gentle.

This is an eyelash applicator you can buy for full strip lashes that will help you get them on.  This is from Japonesque.

My Eyes
These are my eyes shown with just individual false lashes applied in two different techniques: The "gradual flare" is where I used different lengths and just did the outer edge. Then the "entire lash line" look had false lashes from outer edge to inner eye applied all in the same length of lashes. You can see how one looks fuller (and more dramatic) than the other this way.

Practice makes perfect, so don't get frustrated when trying to glue them on. One great way is to use a hand-held mirror laying on a table and you look down into the mirro while applying (rather than looking straight ahead into a mirror). This trick will keep your eyes in the position needed in order to get them on right. Have fun!

Finding the Right Makeup Artist for Your Wedding

You're engaged, congratulations! With all the planning you have on your plate, finding a makeup artist will be one of them, so to make it easier, consider these questions when you narrow down the contenders:

Q: What should a bride look for when researching a makeup artist?
A: You should look for 3 things - Technique, experience and a good portfolio. Although cost is a factor, never solely base your decision on price alone.

TECHNIQUE - *Do they use airbrush or traditional cosmetics? Which method suits your needs best?

EXPERIENCE - How long have they been doing makeup? **Are they familiar with bridal and/or editorial makeup?

GOOD PORTFOLIO - Does their website have lots of examples for you to see their work? Do they have a lot of bridal photos? If they don't have a website, do they have pictures they can show you?

*Airbrush is formulated to look perfect on film, in photos and in person and there are trained techniques that allow the artist to ensure this perfection is accomplished.
**There is a difference with bridal, editorial and media (t.v.) makeup, so picking an artist that is familiar with bridal makeup will be able to create a long lasting, photo-ready look for you.

Q: What are the advantages of airbrush makeup compared to traditional makeup?
A: If you are not sure what the difference is, consider this: With airbrush, each persons foundation color is custom blended to match their individual skin tone, unlike regular foundation, where the closest color that matches you is used in most cases. Airbrush is also sprayed on to the skin, not rubbed into the pores, in a light seamless veil of color that creates a flawless complexion and does not need to be touched up. Airbrush makeup was made to be worn for long hours and sustain its beauty, while traditional makeup typically requires some maintenance to look good.

Q: How long will the makeup last?
A: It all depends on you/your skin type, and which method/products (airbrush or traditional) are used. Wedding makeup should be virtually maintenance free with very little touch-up (lipstick, gloss, blotting, etc..), so how well you maintain your made-up face will determine the longevity. Keep your hands off and blot with care. Any professional makeup artist, whether using airbrush or traditional cosmetics, will know how to give you the perfect face for your special day. Skin prep prior to a makeup application is also important, and your makeup artist should advise you of what to use and/or stay clear of.

Do your research, because one makeup artist's idea of "pretty" makeup is another person's worst nightmare.
Of course I am biased to have all brides use airbrush since I know it's a perfect choice for all skin types, tones, condition, ages and needs, and looks gorgeous on everyone. But I also know that any professional makeup artist well-versed in bridal makeup can get the job done and make you a beautiful bride too. So best wishes and happy researching.

Wedding Makeup Tips for Summer Brides

Wedding Season is in full swing and since brides are striving to create their ultimate look for their special day, these four simple makeup tips are sure to capture true bridal beauty.

1. Emphasize the eyes
Sheer foundation that doesn't mask your skin is always important and can help you get that "glow". Heavy foundation is never a good look; regardless of the season or reason. The bridal trend has always been about the eyes, so false lashes are the perfect way to add a little glamour. Long and lush lashes, shimmery shadows and lots of eyeliner will make your eyes smolder and have everyone holding their gaze just a little bit longer.

2. Blushing bride
A touch of peach blush give cheeks a warm hint of color and looks great on every skin tone.

3. Pucker up
A neutral (nude/light pink) toned lipstick with a little hint of color is always a popular choice and virtually maintenance free (unlike red). Finding the right shade of nude however might take a little practice because you don't want to look washed-out, so try on lots and take pics to find the perfect one for you. Be weary of dark shades on your wedding day because they will require touch-ups to ensure it hasn't smudged (especially after all that kissing).

4. Play it safe
Natural beauty with captivating eyes is the look most brides should strive for. With this flattering look, you are almost guaranteed not to have any makeup regrets when you see your wedding photos. Your wedding day is not the right time to try an entirely new look, so play it safe, because you want to be recognizable.

Easy, right? Even if you consider yourself a minimalist when it comes to your makeup routine, consult with a professional makeup artist to set up a trial to show you how gorgeous this look can be.

Men on Makeup: Increase Your Approachability

Did you know studies have shown that women who wear makeup draw 33% more men then a woman without makeup? I know this isn't a dating blog but if there were (single) women out there who wondered why they aren't meeting anyone, maybe it's not about the lack of men, but the lack of embracing the opportunities to use the tools we have as women to get the man. Never underestimate the power of makeup.

Painting of the face (and body) dates back in history over 10,000 years. The first cosmestics were discovered in ancient Egypt and used for everything from ritualistic to honorific (a mark of distinction, esteem or respect) - but often, especially in modern times, the context has been sexual. While over the ages, women wearing makeup have attracted admiring glances, it may also affect perceptions, both negatively and positively. But does it actually encourage others to make the first move? Psychologists did an experiment to see if makeup really did play a substantial role in attracting the opposite sex and the results weren't surprising.

The test subjects were two women sitting in a bar (seated separately pretending to wait on friends) to see how long it would take men to approach them. First experiment had both women wearing makeup and the second experiment without anything but moisturizer, while they waited for men to chat them up. With makeup, it took the men only 17 minutes to make contact (averaging 3 men per hour), while without makeup, 43 minutes to approach them (averaging .5 men per hour). Not sure if I have ever seen a .5 man but needless to say don't want to.

The results showed that makeup was effective in changing men's behavior, with one third more men approaching the two women when they were made-up. But while this study was done in good fun, there was an obvious issue the researchers acknowledged: wearing makeup could have given the two women more confidence, subtly changing their behaviour and encouraging men to approach. This may well have accounted for the men's behaviour instead of the makeup. Either way, you can't argue that makeup played a significant role.

This study also raised an interesting question on how exactly makeup works? While makeup seems to work by increasing perceived attractivity, it can also signal a willingness to interact or even availability. Further, cosmetics can send signals about status: one study published in the International Journal of Cosmetics Science has found that people judge women wearing cosmetics as higher earners with more prestigious jobs. Hmmm?

Researchers have even looked at which components of makeup are most attractive to men. The results of that study found that eye makeup has the most powerful effect on female perceived attractivity, followed by foundation. Lipstick, surprisingly, was found to have little independent effect, but was rated as the one product women would wear if only allowed one cosmetic item.

Nowadays considering the more radical methods people use for changing their appearance, like cosmetic surgery, applying a little makeup to enhance ones looks (or increases chances in the dating scene) seems innocent enough, especially when you know it will get you 33% more attention from men, and boost your self-esteem. Reason #1,432,786 why I love makeup.

Classic Beauties - Finding Your Inner Bombshell

I love to see photos of movie starlets from the 1950's & 1960's because of how their beauty stood out. Not to mention their feminine (and attainable) body shapes, which to many, are still considered sexy today, when size 6-12 was the norm, and not the exception. Beautiful clothes, hair and makeup really did "make" the woman and still holds true today.

You don't need a million bucks to look like a million.  Nor do you need to follow the trends to fit in. You just need motivation and inspiration to find your inner beauty bombshell and create the look that's right for you. Start your quest online and look up celebrities whose styles you admire to get a feel of what you want your new look to mirror. Even these classic beauties have style thats still seen in magazines today, with an updated look.

Whether you start with a new hair color/style or switch up your mini skirts for knee-length with more fabrics that flow rather than adhere. Kitten heels for 4.5" platform stilletos, or even forgoing the routine little-black-dress for this seasons hottest colors; the point is, you can pull it off. Confidence is most important, if nothing else, and I always say when you look good you will feel good. So ladies, find what makes you a star and shine!

Makeup Fit For a (future) Queen

Today, Her Royal Highness, Princess Catherine Elizabeth, The Duchess of Cambridge, (as she is now to be known), married her Prince "Charming" (formerly Prince William of Wales), His Royal Highness, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, in a wedding that held traditional customs with a modern flair. Wills & Kate looked blissfully happy and it showed.

Kate's dress, created by Sarah Burton, Creative Director of the late designer Alexander McQueen label, most certainly captured Kate's envious figure with modesty. Her hair was done up beautifully by London's Richard Ward salon in a "demi-chignon" and her already gorgeous face was aglow from bridal excitement, and a very elegant look that was subtle and flattering.

Kate's wedding day look was created by none other then the bride herself, and I have to say she did a wonderful job. Her beautiful skin, light lip, highlighted cheeks and stunning eyes were perfectly done up and I wouldn't have done anything differently. Congratulations to the Royal couple.

NEW Lipstick Terminology

I posted last year about lipstick types (glossy, matte, stain, etc..), Sept. - "What's In a Name", and although those lipsticks will always be relevant, a NEW batch of products (and terms) are here to give you even more options for the perfect pout.

"GEL" - A full coverage formula that is less waxy and more sexy than traditional full coverage.
"MIST" - A silky wash of color that lasts up to 3 hours.
"SHINE" - Equal parts high-shine gloss and creamy lipstick that goes on light but can be layered for more intensity.
"CANDY" - Just a pop of color that comes in a chapstick-like base, gives your lips more of a candy-stained look (think lollipop).

Have fun playing with the formula(s) to find what works best for you.

Good Grooming & Friends

We all know who "Dear Abby" is...she dishes out advice in a daily column to those in need of guidance, assistance, direction or an answer to something that troubles them. Like any "dear" friend should, Abby offers an honest and straight-forward answer, but do some people who need to hear the truth, or ask to be told the truth, really want to KNOW the truth? Below was the post in todays column:

DEAR ABBY: Just how honest should you be with a friend? My friend "Frannie" did not receive a promotion in her department, and I think I know why -- her appearance. The promotion would have required more interaction with clients. Frannie is bright, hard-working, has Christian ethics, a beautiful, trim figure, a wide smile and dresses well. But -- she wears no makeup, doesn't pluck her huge unibrow and wears sandals that expose her very hairy toes and the hairy tops of her feet.

Many people have commented to me about her hairy feet and face, but I have not had the heart to tell her what they say. She has also been asking me why guys shy away from her. Do I say nothing, or should I offer helpful advice? -- FRANNIE'S FRIEND IN NORTH CAROLINA

DEAR FRIEND: What you need to ask yourself before raising a sensitive subject like this is: Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it kind? From where I sit, telling Frannie what she needs to hear passes those tests. Because Frannie has been asking why men shy away from her, that's your opening to talk to her about her grooming. Many women have body-hair issues, but there are solutions for it. The poor woman needs the services of a cosmetologist

I giggled a little when I read this because I am sure we have ALL come across a friend who could use a reality check but we just don't have the heart to tell them for fear or hurting their feelings. Like "Frannie's Friend in NC" no one could muster up the nerve to suggest that some grooming might better Frannie's professional and personal situations. Two days ago I encountered a friend who seeked out my advice on "remaking" her look for the new year because she wanted a change. I asked her what she didn't like, and she said "everything", and then asked me where to start and to "be honest" with her.

Offering my advice/opinion isn't difficult when someone asks me, but finessing the words to not hurt feelings can be tricky sometimes since I can be a bit blunt. People who know (and love) me however know to expect this from me, and always comment on how they can count on me to be truthful. I knew my advice could only help my friend since the changes were within her control of grooming and appearance suggestions, but unfortunately the conversation didn't go so well. She was shocked to hear my advice because it obviously wasn't what she wanted to hear and got upset with me because I didn't say she was "perfect" the way she was.

I don't regret what I said to my friend since I wouldn't be doing her any favors by lying and saying her mustache was beautiful and her ill-fitting clothes complimented her figure, but I do now realize that when someone asks you to "be honest" with them (about their appearance), you should also be extra kind on your advice. Lesson learned.
